Princeton University Thesis on Sustainable Design

Eco-aesthetic architecture is inspiring and enlightening. Eco-technic architecture quantifiably reduces environmental impact. Each approach has inspired both progress and criticism, but both must have a strong presence in the future of sustainable architecture.

Across the board, award-winning architects use an integrative approach as a means of balancing these two priorities — invisibly incorporating mechanical and passive systems into the project's core. Up until recently, this approach has limited artistic expression. However, sustainability is not inherently restrictive. Rather, founding scholars in sustainable architecture have proven that environmentally-sensitive strategies can be the basis for blooming creativity.

UC Berkeley Thesis on Shared Living Energy Performance

My research will focus on the growing industry of co-living and co-housing and the energy performance of projects designed around communal amenities. What potential do these projects have for downsizing systems and reducing per capita resource use? With more square footage dedicated to malleable common spaces, greater overall formal flexibility is allowed, making room for innovation in natural heating and ventilation, daylight and sensory design. Great performance can be achieved on multiple fronts while increasing quality of life for residents, reducing rent, and even increasing revenue for building owners. Additional research could help popularize the co-living lifestyle for a wider set of demographics, stimulating the growth and development of housing with all of these positive qualities.
